At the New Year, let’s bring in the spiritual light by chanting the Gayatri Mantra/prayer. I will be doing a fire ceremony on New Year’s Day with 1000 Names of Gayatri.
The Gayatri mantra is known in India as the Essence of all Mantras. Chanting it will bring enlightenment, and on the way good mental and physical health, protection, and all the siddhis (extra-normal powers) with the wisdom not to misuse them.
The longer version, which has a more intense effect in us, takes us through every chakra, starting at the base chakra and taking us through the crown chakra. This is the only mantra which takes us through the crown chakra in the pattern of stimulation of the petals on all 7 chakras. Other mantras stop at the third eye and cycle back around from there.
When chanting it, it works best if you concentrate on feeling your energy/kundalini shakti moving from each chakra to the next higher one, as you chant the names of the seven luminous lokas (dimensional locations.)
Then we move up from the crown chakra of 1000 petals, signifying enlightenment if initiated at that level, through our sun, here called Savitur, to Devasya, where the devas live at the great central sun. Next as we pull that divine energy back down the spine, we ask for enlightenment of our entire being. This is all within one mantra, then we chant again as many as we can at a time.
Namadeva Acharya, chanted this longer version as his main mantra and quit keeping a record of how many he had chanted when he reached 10,000,000 in 2005. While most of us won’t get anywhere near that number, we should make it our main mantra, and however many we chant will help us to good health, good emotions, good mind, and as a bonus, we will stimulate our brains to avoid dementia and Alzheimer’s.
To get you started or aid your practice, Namadeva Acharya teaches the long and short versions of the mantra plus the 1000 Names and Powers of Gayatri on a 2-CD set or download: Click here for Namadeva chanting Gayatri
